Heidi Knight School of Dance helps students of all age groups and skill levels to become better dancers.

Ballet

The technical foundation for many forms of dance. Barre, center floor, and across the floor progressions are all used in developing ballet technique. This class will help students develop grace, poise, strength, flexibility, and balance.

What to wear
Girls: Solid-color leotard and pink tights (no skirts), pink split-sole ballet shoes. Hair must be pulled back in a secure bun.


Boys: T-shirt and shorts or athletic pants, black ballet shoes,

Jazz

A fun style of dance that combines upbeat stylized movement with proper technique. The class consists of a warm-up, conditioning exercises, across-the-floor progressions, and choreography all set to age-appropriate music.

What to wear
Girls: Leotard or fitted dance top, leggings or fitted dance shorts, and slip-on jazz shoes (suggested color: skin tone). Hair must be secured away from the face and neck in a ponytail or bun.


Boys: T-shirt and shorts or athletic pants, black jazz shoes.

Tap

A traditional form of dance that emphasizes footwork and the expression of rhythm through sound. Students develop musicality, timing, and coordination skills.

What to wear
Girls: Leotard or fitted dance top, leggings or fitted dance shorts, and oxford-style tap shoes (suggested color: black). Hair must be secured away from the face and off the neck in a ponytail or bun.


Boys: T-shirt and shorts or athletic pants, black tap shoes.

Hip Hop

*Must also be enrolled in jazz.

Fun and energetic freestyle dance form inspired by today’s latest music and trends. Age-appropriate music and movement are used for each class.

What to wear
Comfortable clothing and clean sneakers

Pointe Prep (5th Grade & Up) & Pointe

*Teacher approval & two additional ballet or one ballet and one lyrical/contemporary required. Pointe Prep will not participate in the Showcase.

Point-Prep students will work to meet the criteria and expectations to be approved for pointe shoes. Pointe is offered to advanced ballet students.

Pointe General Guidelines
Pointe Prep: Age 10 and up with no pointe experience
Pointe 1: 2 years or less of dancing en pointe (having pointe shoes) OR teacher approval
Pointe 2-3: 3-plus years of dancing en pointe OR teacher approval

What to wear
Solid-color leotard and pink tights. Ballet skirts are optional. Pink split-sole ballet shoes for pointe prep and pointe shoes for pointe. Hair must be pulled back in a secure bun.

Lyrical/Contemporary (3rd Grade & Up)

*Must also be enrolled in ballet.
Class will include both lyrical and contemporary movement.

Lyrical is an expressive form of dance that incorporates a fusion of many dance styles. This style often tells a story through choreography and dance phrases. Dancers are also encouraged to explore their emotions and movement through improvisation.
Contemporary is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical, classical ballet and even hip-hop. Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and body through their movement.
What to wear
Girls: Leotard or fitted dance top, leggings or fitted dance shorts, and bare feet. Hair must be secured away from the face and off the neck in a ponytail or bun.


Boys: T-shirt and shorts or athletic pants, bare feet.

Boys Only Hip Hop

The high-energy, fast-paced atmosphere of this class is perfect for the guys!

What to wear
Comfortable clothing and clean sneakers

Acrobatics

*Must also be enrolled in a dance class. Acro classes are billed separately from regular tuition and will not participate in the Showcase.

Acro technique includes balancing, limbering, tumbling and partnering, and is based on flexibility, contortion, and strength. Classes begin with warm-up and exercises to improve strength and flexibility, followed by instruction in acrobatics and tumbling skills. Students acquire strength, balance, and flexibility that assist them in other areas of dance.


Acro Requirements

  • Level 1  Beginner
  • Level 2  Must have Cartwheel, Round-Off, and Standing Backbend
  • Level 3  Must have front & back walkover
