Contemporary Dance Classes offer the perfect blend of artistry, emotion, and technique. At Heidi Knight School of Dance, students from
Huntsville, Monrovia, Madison, and Harvest come together to grow their skills, strengthen their creativity, and develop their own movement style in a supportive studio environment.
Our contemporary program is open to dancers 3rd grade and up and includes both lyrical and contemporary movement.
Please note: All students enrolled in Contemporary Dance Classes must also be enrolled in ballet.

Contemporary dance brings together elements of modern, jazz, lyrical, classical ballet, and even hip hop to create a style that is fluid, expressive, and deeply connected to emotion. What to Wear to

Girls:
Leotard or fitted dance top, leggings or fitted dance shorts, and bare feet. Hair must be secured away from the face and off the neck in a ponytail or bun.
Boys:
T-shirt, shorts or athletic pants, and bare feet.
Proper attire ensures comfort, safety, and the ability to move freely during floor work and expressive combinations.
Lyrical and Contemporary Combined
Our Contemporary Dance Classes include both lyrical and contemporary techniques to give dancers a comprehensive and balanced experience.
Lyrical:
Lyrical dance fuses multiple styles and focuses on expressive movement that often tells a story. Dancers learn choreography that encourages emotional connection, fluidity, and musical interpretation. Improvisation is also incorporated, giving dancers space to explore their own movement and creativity.
Contemporary:
Contemporary dance blends multiple dance genres and challenges dancers to think beyond traditional technique. This style emphasizes body awareness, breath, unique shapes, dynamic transitions, and emotional expression. Contemporary dancers learn to move in and out of the floor, shift weight smoothly, and connect intention to movement.
