Heidi Maness Knight, owner and director, is certified to teach dance
through written and oral examination by Dance Masters of America.
She is an active member of DMA Chapter 33, and currently serves as
the Performing Arts Co-Chair.
Heidi began studying dance at the age of four and started
competing at nine. She received her early training in the areas of
ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, lyrical, and acrobatics. Heidi has performed
across the country and abroad, studying under some of the world’s
most renowned teachers and choreographers. She toured and
performed in England and Wales as part of the Friendship
Ambassadors program. Heidi also performed at Walt Disney World,
Six Flags over Georgia, and has appeared on stage with Sam Wright,
the voice of “Sebastian the Crab” from the movie “The Little Mermaid”.
She spent four years training as an assistant teacher and began teaching
her own classes before graduating from high school.
Heidi continued studying and teaching dance while attending the University of Alabama. She
spent four years teaching all disciplines of dance at the Academy of Ballet and Jazz in
Tuscaloosa. Heidi was also highly involved in various campus honor societies and
organizations and was an active member of Phi Mu sorority. Heidi graduated magna cum laude
from UA with a degree in Communications and a minor in Dance. She worked as a producer
for television stations in Tuscaloosa and Las Vegas before returning home to North Alabama,
where she spent time in front of the camera as a reporter at WAAY-TV.
As a dance educator, Heidi has developed specialized curriculums in the disciplines of jazz,
tap, ballet, acrobatics, and hip-hop. She has also developed a highly successful pre-school
dance program. She directs the Heidi Knight School of Dance Company Dancers. Her students
have received top honors at both the regional and national level. They also consistently win
scholarships and prestigious individual awards, including 49 scholarships for the 2008-2009
competition season. In 2009, the HKSD Company received the honor of winning the “Co.
Dance Award” at the Co. Dance Birmingham competition. This award is given to one studio
whose students, faculty, and parents demonstrate exceptional attitudes, sportsmanship, and
conduct. In 2009, Heidi’s routine “Mary Poppins” won 1st Overall Awards at each of the
competitions HKSD attended and won the “Best of Jump” award and the “Best Nu Group”
award. “Sea Cruise” also won the “Best of Jump” award. These are the highest awards
groups can receive at Jump and NUVO dance conventions.
Heidi’s routine “Old School Groove” won the 2007 Hollywood Vibe National “Battle of the
Stars” competition and was featured on the Hollywood Vibe website and in national advertising.
Heidi also choreographed the 2007 National Junior Overall award-winning routine. Her students
have performed at various community events including Panoply Arts Festival and the Madison
Street Festival. They are also featured on numerous middle school, high school, and college
dance teams and cheerleading squads.
Always striving to further develop her teaching skills and stay current in choreography, Heidi
enjoys taking master classes and attending dance workshops and conventions. She completed
the accredited Teacher Training Workshop at Broadway Dance Center in New York City.
There, she studied all phases of dance under some of the most highly sought-after teachers
and choreographers in the country. Heidi is a recipient of the nationally acclaimed Company
Dance Educator’s Award. This award is selected by the Company Dance faculty and presented
to one teacher at each convention for outstanding achievement as a dance educator. Heidi has
also received a number of awards for her choreography. She is married to Colby Knight and
they are the parents of Tucker Cavett.
