HKSD Courses Offered
the faculty. We strongly encourage students ages six and up with previous experience to take at
least two classes in order to discover their interests and talents.

Creative Movement (Age 2)
Introduction to basic movement. This class is 30 minutes long and consists of Ballet, Tap and
Tumbling. It includes coordination and timing builders, games, and songs specifically designed for
the youngest dancer.

Preschool I and II (Ages 3 & 4)
This class consists of Ballet, Tap, Tumbling, and Personality Singing and includes coordination and
timing builders, games, and songs.  This class provides a firm foundation for any discipline of
dance a child may wish to pursue. The Preschool I class is designed for 3 year olds and 4 year-old
beginners. The Preschool II class is designed for 4 year olds with dance experience. Both levels
meet for 45 minutes each week.

Combination Course (Ages 5 & 6)
This course is an introduction to all phases of dance. The class incorporates Ballet, Tap, Jazz, and
Acrobatics and meets for 45 minutes per week. Students will learn the basic steps from each
discipline, which provides the perfect foundation for any area of dance they may wish to pursue.

**Attire for Creative Movement, Preschool, and Combination classes:  Leotard and tights (any
style or color), pink ballet shoes, white tap shoes.  Jazz shoes are not required for Combination
classes.  All students should have a dance bag for their belongings.    

Ballet / Pointe
The technical foundation for all forms of dance.  Barre, center floor, and progressions (movements
across the floor) are all used in developing ballet technique. This class will help students develop
grace, poise, and balance. Pointe classes are offered to advanced ballet students; these dancers
must be approved by our pointe instructor and must be enrolled in an additional ballet technique
class each week.
**Attire: Solid-color leotard and pink tights, pink split-sole ballet shoes

Tap
A fun class that emphasizes footwork and the expression of rhythm through sound. Students learn
timing, balance, and coordination.  All classes work on basic tap skills-progressing through tap
steps, combinations, and dances.
**Attire:  Leotard, tights, jazz pants, or fitted hot pants (any style or color), Black oxford style tap
shoes

Jazz
A fun, energetic type of dance and the most popular type of dance offered today.  Students are
taught warm-up techniques and conditioning exercises to help strengthen them as dancers and
prepare them for more difficult combinations and moves.  Students also learn routines that fit
today’s music.
**Attire:  Leotard, tights, jazz pants, or fitted hot pants (any style or color), tan slip-on jazz shoes


Acrobatics
Classes begin with warm-up and flexibility exercises followed by instruction in tumbling skills.  
Students acquire strength, balance, and flexibility that assist them in other areas of dance.
**Attire:  Leotard with jazz pants or fitted hot pants (any style or color), no shoes


Hip Hop
Fun and energetic freestyle dance form.  Relaxed atmosphere and dress code.  Student must also
be enrolled in Jazz.
**Attire:  Comfortable clothing (no baggy t-shirts) and clean tennis shoes
